Your Health Journey
Hi, my name is Mary Kay Haines, and I am here at Rochester Holistic Arts to assist you on your health journey. After spending several decades as a Registered Dental Hygienist, I became frustrated listening to patients who take more medications every year and still suffer from weight gain, food sensitivities, hormone fluctuations, slow memory and numerous aches and pains.
I was also suffering with the same issues and set forth to learn about leaky gut syndrome which changed my life. My body started healing itself and I dropped 15 lbs., hot flashes are gone, and the aches and pains disappeared.
It happened when I removed the chemicals and toxins, learned the proper diet that works for me and introduced mindset tools to reduce stress. My organs and tissues were finally able to start performing their specific jobs correctly. I can joyfully say today that now I have consistent daily energy, quicker memory recall, a weight that I can move and feel comfortable with and thank God I rarely take any pain relievers.
There is so much I want to share about my story. I’m linking my website to connect on a free discovery, no obligation, call journey at the end of the blog to see how you are working and managing your health. I would love to meet you!
Since health is a huge topic these days, I thought it would be best to start out with the health industry and go thru the many possibly new words that you may hear in health care and at RHA.
Conventional or Allopathic medicine:
A system in which medical doctors and other healthcare professionals such as nurses, pharmacists and therapists treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation or surgery. This may also be called biomedicine, mainstream medicine, orthodox medicine or Western medicine.
Alternative medicine:
A system of therapeutic approaches in place of traditional medicine, also used to treat and eliminate diseases.
Integrative medicine: A system referring to combining complimentary treatments and conventional care. Also called complimentary medicine.
Naturopathic or Holistic medicine: A system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself. It embraces many therapies including herbs, massage, acupuncture, exercise, and nutritional counseling. It is a quest for optimal health and wellness that considers the whole person-the body, mind, spirit and emotions.
Functional Medicine: A system biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease. Each symptom may be one of many, contributing to an individual’s illness. This is a diagram from Institute of Functional Medicine explaining how one condition can have many causes as well as one cause can be one of many conditions
The most important part of this article is how can the services at RHA assist you in finding the missing pieces of your health puzzle? In general, together we will find out what is best to guide you in eating right, sleeping right, pooping right, exercising right and supplementing or not.
As a wife, mother, dental hygienist and daughter, I started using integrative and naturopathic approaches for many years with my children and family.
In 2015 I decided to go back to school to become a board-certified Traditional Naturopath and Functional Medicine Practitioner.
As a Naturopath I believe that nature holds many of the answers to our health questions, however, I came from a preventive healthcare background and wanted more in-depth reasons why our health can go astray. For this reason, I studied a year of functional medicine to get to the root causes of disease using bloodwork and specific lab tests.
These two together give us a pattern of dis-ease. It emphasizes healthy outcomes using the bodies correct mechanism of action.
Frankly I believe you are the doctor of the future and using different types of therapy will help restore the body, mind and spirit. The body is not just made of mechanic parts set out to do their job. Our past traumas, emotions and daily outlook all play a part on our health, immune system and future.
